What is EMDR Therapy?

EMDR therapy, or Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, is a research-backed therapy that helps the brain heal from trauma. When something overwhelming happens, our brain doesn’t always process it fully. Instead, it can get “stuck,” leaving us with triggers, anxiety, or painful beliefs about ourselves. EMDR works by helping the brain reprocess these experiences so they no longer feel as raw or disruptive in daily life.

 

Think of your brain like a file cabinet. Most memories are neatly filed away where they belong. But when trauma happens, it’s like shoving a messy, unorganized folder into the drawer. Every time you open the cabinet, that folder spills out, creating chaos. EMDR is the process of opening that folder, sorting through the contents safely, and filing them back in the right place. The memories don’t disappear, but they lose their overwhelming power, allowing you to move forward with more peace.

 

Through structured phases and the use of bilateral stimulation (like eye movements or tapping), EMDR helps connect the “stuck” parts of the brain with its natural healing system. Over time, the memory becomes less distressing, and new, more positive beliefs about yourself take root. Many clients find they are able to recall their past without being controlled by it, creating space for growth, healing, and a stronger sense of self.

WHAT to EXPECT in emdr therapy

Identify present day symptoms that are causing distress or impacting close relationships with family, friends or intimate partners.

Create a customized roadmap to healing by pinpointing the source of these present day symptoms to early life experiences.

Reorganize these early life events through EMDR specific techniques. This allows memories to be stored properly in the brain, alleviating your present day symptoms.

Individual EMDR Therapy

You can choose between 55- or 90-minute EMDR sessions, depending on what feels most supportive for your healing pace.

 

EMDR might be a good fit for you if:


→ You have gaps in your memory from childhood and aren’t sure why
→ You feel like there’s “more to the story,” but question if you’re just making it up
→ You can recall painful childhood experiences that still feel fresh
→ You experienced loss, neglect, or trauma that never got the closure it deserved

→ You struggle with low self-esteem, even when you’re achieving or “doing well”

Once you feel ready, we’ll begin the deeper healing work—processing memories, triggers, and beliefs that have kept you stuck, so you can finally move forward with clarity and peace.

One on One

EMDR for a
Recent Traumatic Event

If you have experienced a recent traumatic or distressing event, I have specialized training in this area that can help alleviate symptoms that may be getting in the way of every day life. Symptoms may include, but are not limited to intrusive or racing thoughts, flashbacks, heightened arousal, sleep disturbances, or increased anxiety.

 

How is this different than traditional EMDR therapy?

With this approach, it is not required to take a deep dive into early life experiences, therefore allowing us to focus on the recent experience.

My Approach
  • During the initial session, we will discuss goals for treatment and very briefly review the incident in which you are seeking support.

I'm here to help! I stand firm that no question is a bad question and I am here to support you as you gain confidence in this amazing approach to healing.
